''사라센의 사도''인 성 모세(Moyses)는 아랍 사람으로 오랫동안 시리아와 이집트 사이의 사막에서 은수자로서 살았다. 이 지방은 주로 사라센 유목민들이 거주하는 땅으로 별을 섬기는 자들이 주축을 이루었다. 알렉산드리아(Alexandria)의 주교 루키우스(Lucius)는 그를 주교로 축성하여 선교 사업을 주도하기를 희망하였으나 그가 아리우스파(Arianism)에 속한 주교였기 때문에 성 모세는 이를 거절하였다. 그 후 성 모세는 정통교리를 따르는 주교가 되었는데, 그의 주요 업적은 로마인과 사라센인 간의 평화를 유지시킨 것이다. 사라센이란 말은 그리스와 로마인들이 시로-아라비아(Syro-Arabia) 사막의 유목민에게 붙인 이름이다(가톨릭홈에서)

Hermit in the area between Syria and Egypt. Evangelized the nomadic tribes in the Syro-Arabian desert. Mavia, their queen, agreed to this on the provision that Moses be named their bishop. Moses agreed, but a controversy ensued when he refused to deal with the archbishop of Alexandria; the archbishop had jurisdiction over the area, but was supported Arianism, which made him a heretic to Moses. Later consecrated by an orthodox bishop, Moses spent the rest of his life teaching and preaching to the nomads. Negotiated a lasting peace between the nomads and the Roman empire.

Arab hermit and bishop who is called “the Apostle of the Saracens.” He lived in the desert regions of Syria and Egypt, caring for the local nomadic tribes. When the Romans imposed peace upon the Saracens, Queen Mavia, the Saracen ruler, demanded that Moses be consecrated a bishop. He accepted against his will and maintained the peace between the Saracens and Rome. The Saracens were a nomadic people of the Syro-Egyptian desert so designated by the Romans.
