세르불로는 어릴 때부터 수족이 마비된 걸인이었다.
그는 똑바로 서거나 손을 입에까지 가져갈 수도 없었고, 혼자서 이쪽 저쪽으로 움직이지 못하는 반신불수였다.
그의 어머니와 형제들은 그를 로마의 성 끌레멘스 성당 문앞에 갖다두고 애긍을 청하여 먹고살게 하였다.
그러던 중, 그는 성경을 한권 구입하였다.
읽을 줄 모르는 그는 주의깊게 성경을 응시함으로써 마음으로 이해하였다고 한다.
많은 세월이 흐른 뒤, 그는 찬미가와 하느님께 드리는 감사가를 노래할 수 있게 되었다.
그때부터 그는 자기에게 희사하는 사람들을 위하여 찬미가나 시편을 노래로 들려준 것이다.
그럴 때마다 사람들은 "천국에서 들리는 이상한 음악"으로 들었다고 한다.
그후 그는 임종했는데, 그의 유해는 성 끌레멘스 성당에 안장되니, 연일 기적이 일어났던 것이다.
성 그레고리오(대)는 세르불로야말로 진정 하느님을 사랑한 사람이며,
불구의 몸으로 그토록 아름다운 찬미가를 노래한 하느님 애찬자로 높이 공경하였다.

Afflicted from birth with a severe palsy that prevented him from ever standing or even sitting unaided. His family carried him to the door of Saint Clement’s church in Rome so he could beg for alms. He kept enough for the most meagre existence, giving the rest to beggars he considered poorer than himself, and buying Scriptural works that he would beg people to read to him. Saint Gregory the Great wrote about him.
