1207 년에 태어났다.

헝가리의 왕 안드레아의 딸로서 어린 나이에 튜린지아의 루도비꼬 4 세와 결혼하여 세 아이를 낳았다.

자기 직무에 충실을 기한 동시에 가난한 이들과 병자들을 돌보는데 헌신하고

자기 재산을 나누어 주고 나병환자들을 손수 간호해 주었다.

남편이 십자군 전쟁에서 죽자 자녀들과 함께 부당하게 궁정에서 쫓겨났다.

이 새로운 빈궁의 처지를 신앙과 인내심으로 받아들이고

자녀들의 육아 및 환자들의 간호와 기도생활에 계속 몸바쳤다.

프란치스코 재속 형제회의 회원이 되었고 1231년 세상을 떠났다.

그녀는 3 회의 주보성녀이다. 그레고리오 9 세가 시성하였다.

헝가리의 열심한 왕 안드레아 2세는 1207년 귀여운 딸을 낳았습니다.

그리고 엘리사벳이라는 이름으로 세례를 받게 했습니다.

이 아이는 매우 사랑스러웠기 때문에 투린지아(Thuringia), 헷세(Hesse) 지방의 부유한 백작이

자기의 큰아들 루이의 신부감으로 일찍부터 점찍어 놓았습니다.

이 일이 성사되자 엘리사벳에게 정식으로 사절을 보냈는데 그때 그녀 나이 겨우 세 살이었습니다.

이때부터 그녀는 다음에 남편이 될 루이의 집(성)에서 성장하게 되었습니다.

두 아이들은 친남매처럼 사랑하였고 하느님께 대한 신심과 이웃에 대한 자선행위를 서로 다투어 실행했습니다.

기도하는 엘리사벳의 모습을 본 사람들은 천사를 보고 있다고 믿을 정도였습니다.

가난한 사람들에게 재산을 나누어주는 일이 그녀의 가장 큰 즐거움이었습니다.

좀 성장하자 가난한 사람들과 병자들을 방문했고,

마치 주님께 봉사하듯 대단한 존경심을 가지고 그들을 보살폈습니다.

야심 많은 백작 부인 소피아 미망인은 엘리사벳의 태도가 마음에 들지 않았습니다.

엘리사벳을 헝가리로 되돌려보내고 더 위엄 있는 아가씨를 신부감으로 만드려고 했습니다.

그러나 루이는 엘리사벳이 얼마나 보배로운 존재인지 알고 있었습니다.

18세에 아버지의 일을 계승하게 된 그는 엘리사벳과 결혼식을 올렸습니다.

결혼생활은 정말 행복했고 루이는 자기 부인이 하고자 하는 모든 선행을 하도록 완전히 자유를 주었습니다.

엘리사벳은 아인세낙에 큰 병원을 세웠습니다.

기근 때는 날마다 900명의 어린이들에게 먹을 것을 제공했습니다.

한 번은 가난한 병자들을 위해 외투에 물건을 가득 담아 가는데 남편과 마주쳤습니다.

남편은 집요하게 무엇을 가져가는지 보여달라고 가는 길을 막아섰습니다.

엘리사벳의 외투를 펴자 한겨울인데도 싱싱하고 향기로운 장미가 가득 들어있었습니다. 얼마나 놀랐겠습니까?

남편은 아내가 자선을 계속하도록 허락한 것은 물론입니다.

루이가 멀리 떠나있을 때는 엘리사벳이 섭정을 해야 했습니다.

그러나 시간만 있으면 가난하고 병든 사람들 특히 나병환자들을 돌보았습니다.

한 번은 아무도 돌보지 않는 어린 나병환자를 데려다가 아들처럼 자기 침대에 눕혔습니다.

그런데 뜻밖에 루이가 갑자기 돌아왔고 분노한 미망인은 아들에게

엘리사벳이 무슨 짓을 해서 아들 얼굴을 더럽히고 있는지 보라며 며느리를 비난했습니다.

루이도 흥분해서 침실로 뛰어가 이불을 잡아챘으나 그 순간 그는 너무 놀랐으며 감동의 눈물을 흘렸습니다.

십자가에 달리신 분이 거기 누워 계심을 보았기 때문입니다.

루이는 자기 부인에게 이런 손님은 항상 모셔도 좋다고 했습니다.

이런 엘리사벳이 혹독한 시련을 당해야했습니다.

1227년 프레데릭 2세 황제가 성지에 십자군을 보내기로 하여 열심한 루이 백작도 이 원정팀에 합류합니다.

그러나 루이 백작은 이탈리아 남부 지방을 지나다가 사망하고,

무엇보다도 이 소식이 투린지아에 알려졌을 때 루이의 형제들은 엘리사벳을 학대하고

아이들과 두 명의 하녀와 함께 궁에서 쫓아냈습니다.

아인세낙 사람들은 새 주인들의 적의를 살까봐 그녀가 쉴 집도 주지 않았습니다.

한겨울 깊은 밤이 되어가고 있었습니다.

한 군주의 딸이요, 지금은 미망인이 된 왕후는 겨우 두 달밖에 안된 막내아들과 세 아이들 그리고

두 시녀를 데리고 거리로 쫓겨난 것입니다.

다행히 어떤 남자가 마굿간을 은신처로 내주었습니다.

이 호의가 너무도 고마웠고 엘리사벳은 하느님의 아들이 하늘에서 내려오실 때

베들레헴의 이 집 저 집에서 거절당하다가 마굿간을 피난처로 얻게된 것을 생각했습니다.

그리고 궁에서 일찍이 맛보지 못한 큰 즐거움을 얻었습니다.

전에 그녀가 헌금해서 지은 프란치스코 수도회에서

밤중 기도시간을 알리는 종소리가 들리자

그녀는 달려가 수도자들에게 사은 찬미가를 노래해 주도록 청했습니다.

그녀와 그녀의 아이들이 예수님처럼 된 것을 감사하기 위함이었습니다.

엘리사벳은 생계를 위해 두 명의 충실한 시녀와 할 수 있는 최선을 다했습니다.

먹을 것을 구하려 아마를 잦았고 충분한 수입이 아닌데도 가난한 사람들을 위해 그 일부를 떼어 놓았습니다.

나중에 엘리사벳은 바르트부르그에서 복위되었습니다.

그때 프레데릭 2세 황제가 왕비를 잃고 엘리사벳에게 구혼했으나 거절했습니다.

가난과 은둔생활을 좋아했기에 비록 인간 대사라고는 하지만 세속적인 것을 바라지 않았습니다.

그녀와 두 시녀들은 마르부르그에 있는 프란치스코회 성당 근처의 작은 집에서 살았습니다.

남편이 살아있을 때 프란치스코 3회에 가입했었습니다.

사실 그녀는 독일의 최초 회원이었고 프란치스코 성인에게서 직접 서신을 받았습니다.

제복을 입고 띠를 두르고 병자들을 돌보았으며

학식과 신심을 갖춘 콘라드 수도자의 지도를 받아 전 생애를 봉헌함으로써 수도자처럼 살았습니다.

엘리사벳 성녀는 프란치스코 성인을 만난 적은 없으나,

프란치스코 성인께서 엘리사벳 성녀에게 선물로 보내신 망토를

죽을때 까지 소중히 간직하셨다고 합니다.

주님이 그녀에게 죽음이 가까웠음을 미리 알려주셨기에

엘리사벳은 중병에 걸려있는 자기 고해신부는 곧 병이 낫겠지만

건강한 자신은 머지 않아 죽게된다고 예언했습니다.

정말 고해신부는 곧 회복되었고 엘리사벳은 나흘 후에 병이 들어 그 고해신부를 모시고 임종을 준비했습니다.

엘리사벳은 1231년 11월 9일 하늘나라로 떠났습니다. 그녀의 나이 겨우 24세이었습니다.

그녀의 무덤에서는 수많은 기적이 일어났고, 교황 그레고리오 9세는 1235년 그녀를 시성하였습니다.

그녀는 프란치스코 3회 자매들의 특별한 수호자일 뿐 아니라 정규 3회의 수호자입니다.

교황 레오 13세께서는 그녀를 모든 자매들의 자선사업기관의 수호자로 선언하셨습니다.

헝가리의 국왕 안드레아 2세와 안데크-메란의 젤뜨루다의 딸로 태어난 그녀는

14세 되던 해에 투린지아의 백작, 루디비그 4세와 결혼하였다.

비록 이 결혼이 정치적 이유로 이루어졌지만, 화목하고 평화스러웠다고 하며,

6년 동안을 서로 만족스럽게 살았다.

그들의 집은 아이제나크 근교의 바트부르그성에 있었고, 자녀는 3명을 두었다.

그러나 1227년에 루드비그가 아뿔리아로 출정하는 십자군에 가담하였다가, 오트란토에서 급서하였다.

그 후 그녀는 온갖 슬픔을 극복하고 새로운 삶을 살기 위하여 몸부림치다가,

자선활동에 전념키 위하여 집안의 많은 재산을 가난한 사람들에게 주었다고 한다.

이런 저런 이유 때문에 그녀는 자녀들을 위하여 대비책을 마련한 뒤에 프란치스꼬회 3회원이 되어,

세속을 떠났다.

이 때부터 그녀는 헤쎄의 마르부르그에 살면서 가난하고 병든 사람들을 돌보는데 헌신하였다.

엘리사벳은 마르부르그의 콘라드로부터 영적 지도를 받았는데,

그녀의 영적 생활은 날이 갈수록 풍요롭게 변화되었다.

누구나 놀랄 정도로 가난하고 겸손한 삶을 살았으며, 깊은 사랑으로 모든 이들을 감쌌던 것이다.

그녀는 운명하기 4년 전에 자신을 쫓아냈던 시동생으로부터 성으로 돌아올 허가를 받았고,

또 그녀의 아들에게 백작을 승계시킬 수 있었다.

황후가 가난하고 병든 사람들을 위하여 직접 음식을 날라주고 옷을 지어 준 것은

전대미문의 사건이 아닐 수 없다.

이런 이유들 때문에 그녀는 게르만인들에게서 가장 사랑받는 성녀가 되었다.

그녀는 불과 24년밖에 살지 못하고 마르부르그에서 운명하였지만,

오늘날에는 성 프란치스꼬 재속 3회의 수호성인으로 높은 공경과 사랑을 받고 있다.

1235년, 그레고리오 9세에 의하여 시성되었고, 빵 제조업자 및 빵집의 수호성인이다.

1207년에 태어났다. 헝가리의 왕 안드레아의 딸로서

어린 나이에 튀린지아의 루드비히 4세와 결혼하여 세 아이를 낳았다.

천상 사정에 몰두하였으며, 남편이 죽은 후 가난한 사람들을 도와주고 요양소를 세워 병자들을 돌보았다.

1231년 마르부르크에서 세상을 떠났다.

성녀 엘리사벳의 영적 지도 신부였던 마르부르크의 콘라트가 쓴 편지에서

엘리사벳은 가난한 이들 안에서 그리스도를 알고 사랑했다

엘리사벳은 그때부터 덕행에 있어 특출함을 보이기 시작했다. 항상 가난한 이들을 위로해 왔지만,

자기 궁 옆에다 병원을 짓게 하여 거기에서 온갖 종류의 환자들을 수용하기 시작할 때부터

어려운 이들을 돌보아 주는 데 온전히 헌신하기 시작했다.

그 병원에 도움을 구하러 오는 사람들만이 아니라 자기 남편의 관할 지역에 있던

모든 이들에게도 혜택의 선물을 너그러이 나누어 주곤 했다.

그래서 자기 남편이 관할하는 4개의 영토에서 가지고 있던 모든 재원을 모조리 나누어 주고

심지어는 자기 귀중품과 값비싼 옷들마서 팔아 거기서 얻은 돈을 모두 가난한 이들에게 주었다.

하루에 두 번씩 즉 아침과 저녁에 모든 환자들을 몸소 방문하는 관례를 가져

보기 흉한 환자들을 직접 간호해 주었고

어떤 이들은 먹이고 어떤 이들에게 침상을 마련해 주었으며

또 어떤 이들은 업고 다니고 하여 자신의 자비심을 여러 형태로 그들에게 보여 주었다.

그러나 그렇게 할 때 생전에 남편의 뜻을 어긴 일이 없었다.

그리고 남편이 세상을 떠난 후 완덕에 더 가까이 이르고자 하는 마음을 가져 눈물을 흘리면서

나에게 와 자기가 문전 걸식을 하도록 허락해 달라고 청했다.

어느 성 금요일 날 제대보가 벗겨져 있을 때,

자기가 프란치스꼬회 회원들에게 기증했던 궁중 성당의 제단 위에 손을 얹고는

친한 벗들 앞에서 자신의 의지와 세상의 모든 허영 및

구세주께서 복음에서 버리라 권고하신 모든 것들을 포기했다.

이렇게 한 후, 남편과 함께 살 때 모든 이들로부터 공경을 받았던 그 곳에서 계속 머문다면

세상의 소란과 세속의 영광이 자기 마음을 끌어 잡아당길 그런 위험이 있지 않을까 염려하여,

내가 그것을 원치 않았는데도 나를 따라 마르부르크로 가기로 했다.

거기다 병원을 세워 많은 환자들과 불구자들을 모으고는

가장 버림받은 비참한 이들에게 식탁에서 시중들어 주었다.

그러나 이 모든 일은 단지 그녀의 외부로 드러난 활동에 불과했다.

나는 하느님 앞에서 그녀에 대해 이 말을 하고 싶다.

이 여인만큼 관상에 깊이 젖어 들어간 이를 일찍이 본 적이 없다는 점이다.

수사들과 수녀들이 여러 번 목격했듯이 그녀가 기도의 은밀함에서 나올 때

그 얼굴은 광채로 빛나 그 눈에서 태양 광선과 같은 빛이 쏟아져 나오는 것을 자주 볼 수 있었다.

세상을 떠나기 전 나는 그의 고해를 들었다.

남기고 가는 재산과 의류를 가지고 무엇을 하면 좋겠느냐고 내가 물어보자,

자기 것처럼 보이는 것은 자기 것이 아니고 모두 가난한 이들의 것이라고 대답하면서,

자기가 그때 입고 있던 낡은 옷을 제외하고는 (그 옷을 입고 묻히기를 원했다.)

전부를 가난한 이들에게 나누어 달라고 간청했다.

이 말을 마치고 주님의 몸을 영했다.

그리고나서 저녁 기도 때까지 자기가 전에 설교 말씀에서 들은 거룩한 이야기를 되새겼다.

마침내 열렬한 신심으로 주위에 모인 모든 이들을 하느님께 맡겨 드리면서 평온히 잠들 듯 숨을 거두었다.

엘리사벳이라는 이름의 성녀는 여러 명인데 그 중에도 성후 엘리사벳은 가장 유명한 분이다.

그녀는 그녀 고국의 이름을 따서 헝가리의 엘리사벳이라고도 불리며,

박애의 여왕으로 널리 알려져 존경을 받는다.

엘리사벳은 1207년 헝가리의 왕 안드레아 2세의 공주로 태어났고,

불과 네 살 때에 정치적 이유로 중부 독일 투린지아의 영주의 영식 루도비코와 약혼했으며,

왈크부르크 성에서 일곱 살 위인 그와 함께 성장했다.

둘은 서로 신앙이 두텁게 열심한 남매와 같은 좋은 사이로 자라났으며, 결혼 후에도 그 정이 변치 않았다 한다.

왈트부르크 성은 12,3세기경 문무의 경기장으로 유명했으며, 문인 기사들이 모여

가끔 호화스러운 연회가 베풀어졌으므로 자연히 신심생활에는 지장이 많은 곳이었다.

그러나 하느님의 특별한 보호를 받은 엘리사벳인지라 조금도 그 영향을 받지 않았으며

오히려 어린 마음에도 신앙심이 깊어 노는 장소도 꼭 성당 근처를 택했다.

놀 때에 내기에서 지는 사람은 성당에 가서 주님 기도 열 두 번을 외우도록 되어있었는데,

그것 때문에 일부러 지는 정도였다.

일곱 살 때에 어머니가 암살 당했다는 흉보를 듣고 어린 마음에 심한 충격을 받았으나,

차츰 그것이 하느님의 섭리임을 깨닫자 세상의 허무함을 통감하기에 이르렀다.

엘리사벳은 매 주일마다 수양 어머니인 성주의 부인 소피아의 인솔로

루도비코의 동생과 같이 아이세나하에 대려가 그곳 성당에서 미사에 참여했다.

신분상 그녀는 머리에 화려한 황금관을 쓰고 갔었다.

어느 날 예수께서 못박히신 성상 앞에서 기도하다가 문득 쳐다보니 그 머리에 가시관이 씌워있음을 알고는

즉시 자기 머리에서 금관을 벗어놓았다.

그래서 소피아가 이를 나무라니

“어머니, 예수님께서는 가시관을 쓰고 계시는데 제가 어찌 금관을 쓰고 그 앞에 있겠습니까?”했다.

1206년 시아버지인 헬만 후작이 별세하고 루도비코가 어린 몸으로 투린지아의 성주가 되자,

결국 엘리사벳과의 결혼 문제가 말썽이 되었다.

부하들 중에는 엘리사벳이 지나치게 신앙에만 열중하여 성주의 부인으로서는 적당치 않다는 이유로

배척하는 이가 있었기 때문이다.

그러나 원래 마음이 착한 루도비코는 엘리사벳의 심중을 잘 알고 있었으므로 단호히 거절하고

곧 성대한 결혼식을 올렸다. 그때 엘리사벳은 겨우 15세였다.

결혼 초기에는 매우 원만했다. 루도비코는 진심으로 아내를 사랑하고 남편을 알뜰히 섬겼으며,

서로 국민을 사랑하고 선정을 베푸는데 노력했다.

특히 타고난 그녀의 자애심은 빈민 구제를 염두에 두고 그들을 위해 많은 보조금과 식량을 책정하도록 하고,

때로는 손수 빈민을 탐방해 구제해 주기도 했다.

또한 왈트부르크 성 밑에 병원을 건설하고 가련한 환자를 수용해 치료하도록 하며,

환자들의 상처를 씻어주기도 했다.

1225년에 루도비코는 독일 황제의 수행원으로 로마에 가게 되었으므로

남편을 대신해 엘리사벳이 나라를 잘 다스리고 있었는데,

때마침 전국에 큰 흉년이 들어 빈민들의 참상은 차마 볼 수 없는 상태였다.

그녀는 성의 창고문을 열어 이재민에게 식량을 모두 분배해 주고,

심지어는 자기 의복이며 장식품을 팔아서까지 양식을 장만하여, 그들의 곤궁을 풀어주었다.

그러자 백성들은 진심으로 그녀를 구호의 은인으로 존경을 했으나,

한편 신하 중에는 그 적극적인 구제 사럽에 불만을 품고 성주가 돌아옴을 기다려 그 일들을 일러바쳤다.

그러나 루도비코는 백성들의 만족한 모습을 보고 크게 기뻐하며

오히려 엘리사벳이 한 일을 칭찬하고 책망하지 않았다.

세상에서는 빈민에게 주기 위해 가져온 빵이 장미꽃으로 변했다는 등,

혹은 성에서 쉬게한 나병환자가 루도비코에게는 예수 그리스도로 보였다는 등의 기적담이 퍼지고 있는 것을

보아도 그녀의 자선 사업이 얼마나 일반 사람들의 격찬을 샀는지 알 수 있을 것이다.

루도비코는 물론 아내의 영향도 받았을 것이고, 자신 역시 신앙이 두터운지라, 당시 성지 팔레스티나를

회교도들의 손에서 탈환하기 위해 십자군 전쟁에 참가해 많은 부하를 거느리고 성지로 향했다.

루도비코는 원정 도중 불행히도 병사하고 말았다.

이런 비보에 눈물이 마를 사이도 없이 엘리사벡에게는 설상가상으로 다른 괴로움과 슬픔이 겹쳐왔다.

즉 그녀는 새로 영주가 된 헨리코 라스페의 학대에 못 이겨 두 아이를 데리고

오랫동안 정든 성을 떠나지 않으면 안 되었다.

인정은 조석지변인지라, 과거에 그렇게 많은 혜택을 받은 아이제나하 시민들도

새 영주의 눈이 두려워 누구하나 그녀를 맞아주는 이가 없었다.

보통 사람 같으면 그런 공궁 중에 하느님을 원망할 것이나

엘리사벳은 모든 불행을 하느님의 뜻으로 달갑게 참아 받았다.

그리고 현세에 환멸을 느끼고 더욱 하느님과의 일치를 갈망하게 되었다.

그러는 동안 루도비코의 부하들이 전쟁에서 돌아와 이구동성으로 헨리코의 무례함을 간책하자,

그도 잘못을 뉘우치며 다시 엘리사벳을 성안으로 맞아들이려 했다.

엘리사벳은 이를 정중히 거절하고 전부터 열망하던 수도 생활을 실천하려고

아시시의 성 프란치스코회 제 3회에 입회하고, 마트부르그시 부근에 작은 초막을 마련하고,

겨우 피어나기 시작한 21세의 청춘으로 자선과 기도 생활에만 몰두했으니, 이 얼마나 갸륵한 일인가!

1231년 11월 17일,

이미 선종 준비에 만전을 다한 엘리사벳은 풍부한 하느님의 상금을 받기 위해 천국으로 불려갔다.

전 교회가 깊이 애석히 여겼음은 두말할 것도 없으며, 그녀의 시성은 사후 불과 4년만에 실현되었다.

그때 유해는 이전 묘에서 화려한 성당으로 이송되었고,

독일 황제 프레드릭에 의해 그녀의 머리에 금관이 씌워졌다.

후일 이곳에는 그녀의 성덕을 추앙하기 위한 장려한 대성전이 건축되었으며,

그녀를 공경하는 열이 날로 높아지고, 오늘날에 있어서는 전 교회에서 자선 사업의 주보로 섬기며

프란치스코회 제3회의 수호 성녀로 공경한다.

포르투갈의 이사벨라로 구라파에 널리 알려진 루시타니아의 성녀 엘리사벳(1271-1336년)은

아라곤 3세 국왕의 딸로 태어나 자기의 증조모이신 항가리의 성녀 엘리사벳을 따라 이름지었다.

Princess, the daughter of King Andrew of Hungary. Great-aunt of Saint Elizabeth of Portugal. She married Prince Louis of Thuringa at age 13. Built a hospital at the foot of the mountain on which her castle stood; tended to the sick herself. Her family and courtiers opposed this, but she insisted she could only follow Christ’s teachings, not theirs. Once when she was taking food to the poor and sick, Prince Louis stopped her and looked under her mantle to see what she was carrying; the food had been miraculously changed to roses. Upon Louis’ death, Elizabeth sold all that she had, and worked to support her four children. Her gifts of bread to the poor, and of a large gift of grain to a famine stricken Germany, led to her patronage of bakers and related fields.

Elizabeth was a lifelong friend of the poor and gave herself entirely to relieving the hungry. She ordered that one of her castle should be converted into a hospital in which she gathered many of the weak and feeble. She generously gave alms to all who were in need, not only in that place but in all the territories of her husband’s empire. She spent all her own revenue from her husband’s four principalities, and finally she sold her luxurious possessions and rich clothes for the sake of the poor.

Twice a day, in the morning and in the evening, Elizabeth went to visit the sick. She personally cared for those who were particularly repulsive; to some she gave good, to others clothing; some she carried on her own shoulders, and performed many other kindly services. Her husband, of happy memory, gladly approved of these charitable works. Finally, when her husband died, she sought the highest perfection; filled with tears, she implored me to let her beg for alms from door to door.

On Good Friday of that year, when the altars had been stripped, she laid her hands on the altar in a chapel in her own town, where she had established the Friars Minor, and before witnesses she voluntarily renounced all worldly display and everything that our Savior in the gospel advises us to abandon. Even then she saw that she could still be distracted by the cares and worldly glory which had surrounded her while her husband was alive. Against my will she followed me to Marburg. Here in the town she built a hospice where she gathered together the weak and the feeble. There she attended the most wretched and contemptible at her own table.

Apart from those active good works, I declare before God that I have seldom seen a more contemplative woman.

Before her death I heard her confession. When I asked what should be done about her goods and possessions, she replied that anything which seemed to be hers belonged to the poor. She asked me to distribute everything except one worn-out dress in which she wished to be buried. When all this had been decided, she received the body of our Lord. Afterward, until vespers, she spoke often of the holiest things she had heard in sermons. Then, she devoutly commended to God all who were sitting near her, and as if falling into a gentle sleep, she died.

Elisabetta, sposa di Luigi IV, Langravio di Turingia, fu madre di tre figli. Dopo la morte del marito si consacro interamente alla penitenza, alla preghiera e alla carita. Iscrittasi al Terz’ordine Francescano, fondo in onore di san Francesco l’ospedale di Marburg, in cui ella stessa serviva i malati.

La prima cosa che colpisce, parlando di Santa Elisabetta d’Ungheria, ricordata oggi dal Calendario della Chiesa, in anticipo rispetto alla data tradizionale dei 19 novembre, e la tenerezza degli affetti umani, di donna e di sposa. Fidanzata a soli quattro anni, la figlia di Andrea Il d’Ungheria, aveva sposato a quattordici anni Luigi dei Duchi di Turingia, che ne aveva venti. Ed era stato un matrimonio felice." Se io amo tanto una creatura mortale - diceva Elisabetta alla fedele serva Isentrude - quanto dovrei amare di piu il Signore, immortale e padrone di tutti! ".

Anche Isentrude insiste sul reciproco affetto dei due sposi, quasi per ribadire che la pieta divina non op-prime ne sopprime l’affetto umano. " Si amavano di un amore meraviglioso -ella scrive - e s’incoraggiavano dolcemente, l’uno con l’altra, nel lodare e servire Dio ". Elisabetta amava teneramente Luigi, e Luigi amava lei, per la sua bellezza, la sua gentilezza e la sua grazia. Eppure non si rendeva seducente con mondani accorgimenti: anzi, tra le gentildonne della Turingia, ornate e superbe, la Duchessa era quasi disprezzata per la sua semplicita nel vestire e per la sua modestia nel vivere.

Nel castello di Wartburg, non si distingueva quasi di tra le serve, sempre in faccende, quasi mai in divertimenti. D’altra parte, la giovanissima Duchessa avrebbe avuto poco tempo per le distrazioni mondane; a quindici anni aveva avuto il suo primo figlio; a diciassette una figlia, a venti un’altra figlia, ed era gia vedova da venti giorni!

Il dolce e affettuoso connubio era durato poco, non offuscato da incomprensioni, benche qualche volta il marito trovasse eccessiva la devozione della moglie, come quando si faceva svegliare di notte, all’insaputa del marito, per pregare inginocchiata al letto coniugale.

" Anche quando il marito viveva - dichiaro poi Isentrude - ella era come una religiosa: umile e caritatevole, tutta dedita alla preghiera. Compiva tutte le opere di carita nella piu grande gioia dell’anima e senza mai mutar di volto ". Ma nell’estate del 1227 Luigi parte per la Crociata, mentre Elisabetta aspetta il terzo figlio. Dopo tre mesi, un messaggero porta la notizia che il Duca e morto in Italia. " Morto! - grida Elisabetta. - E con lui e morto ogni mio ben

nel mondo ".

Appena vedova, si scatenano contro Elisabetta le cupidigie dei cognati, che forse non l’avevano mai sopportata. Viene scacciata dal castello di Wartburg; le sono tolti i figli, per i quali rinunzia all’eredita.

Ridotta in poverta, si veste di bigio, come le Terziarie francescane, e si dedica tutta alle opere di misericordia. Nello spirito e dietro l’esempio di San Francesco, morto soltanto da un anno, ella soccorre gli ammalati e cura i lebbrosi, mettendosi sotto la direzione spirituale di un religioso terribilmente esigente, che le infligge la fiagellazione per ogni piccola ammenda.

Per quattro anni fa vita di estrema penitenza e di intensa carita, non mangiando, non dormendo, dando tutto ai poveri, accorrendo al letto degli ammalati. E tutto questo, dai venti ai ventiquattro anni, eta della sua morte, nel novembre dei 1231.

St. Elizabeth of Hungary

Also called St. Elizabeth of Thuringia, born in Hungary, probably at Pressburg, 1207; died at Marburg, Hesse, 17 November (not 19 November), 1231.

She was a daughter of King Andrew II of Hungary (1205-35) and his wife Gertrude, a member of the family of the Counts of Andechs-Meran; Elizabeth’s brother succeeded his father on the throne of Hungary as Bela IV; the sister of her mother, Gertrude, was St. Hedwig, wife of Duke Heinrich I, the Bearded, of Silesia, while another saint, St. Elizabeth (Isabel) of Portugal (d. 1336), the wife of the tyrannical King Diniz of that country, was her great-niece.

In 1211 a formal embassy was sent by Landgrave Hermann I of Thuringia to Hungary to arrange, as was customary in that age, a marriage between his eldest son Hermann and Elizabeth, who was then four years old. This plan of a marriage was the result of political considerations and was intended to be the ratification of a great alliance which in the political schemes of the time it was sought to form against the German Emperor Otto IV, a member of the house of Guelph, who had quarrelled with the Church. Not long after this the little girl was taken to the Thuringian court to be brought up with her future husband and, in the course of time, to be betrothed to him.

The court of Thuringia was at this period famous for its magnificence. Its centre was the stately castle of the Wartburg, splendidly placed on a hill in the Thuringian Forest near Eisenach, where the Landgrave Hermann lived surrounded by poets and minnesingers, to whom he was a generous patron. Notwithstanding the turbulence and purely secular life of the court and the pomp of her surroundings, the little girl grew up a very religious child with an evident inclination to prayer and pious observances and small acts of self-mortification. These religious impulses were undoubtedly strengthened by the sorrowful experiences of her life.

In 1213 Elizabeth’s mother, Gertrude, was murdered by Hungarian nobles, probably out of hatred of the Germans. On 31 December, 1216, the oldest son of the landgrave, Hermann, who Elizabeth was to marry, died; after this she was betrothed to Ludwig, the second son. It was probably in these years that Elizabeth had to suffer the hostility of the more frivolous members of the Thuringian court, to whom the contemplative and pious child was a constant rebuke. Ludwig, however, must have soon come to her protection against any ill-treatment. The legend that arose later is incorrect in making Elizabeth’s mother-in-law, the Landgravine Sophia, a member of the reigning family of Bavaria, the leader of this court party. On the contrary, Sophia was a very religious and charitable woman and a kindly mother to the little Elizabeth.

The political plans of the old Landgrave Hermann involved him in great difficulties and reverses; he was excommunicated, lost his mind towards the end of his life, and died, 25 April, 1217, unreconciled with the Church. He was succeeded by his son Ludwig IV, who, in 1221, was also made regent of Meissen and the East Mark. The same year (1221) Ludwig and Elizabeth were married, the groom being twenty-one years old and the bride fourteen. The marriage was in every regard a happy and exemplary one, and the couple were devotedly attached to each other. Ludwig proved himself worthy of his wife. He gave his protection to her acts of charity, penance, and her vigils, and often held Elizabeth’s hands as she knelt praying at night beside his bed. He was also a capable ruler and brave soldier. The Germans call him St. Ludwig, an appellation given to him as one of the best men of his age and the pious husband of St. Elizabeth.
