스페인의 세고비아 태생으로 마요르카에서 운명한 알퐁소 로드리게스는 성공한 양모업자의 아들로서,
그가 23세 때 아버지의 가업을 상속받았다.
그런데 뜻밖에도 가업이 기울고, 아내와 어린 두 아이가 죽자, 평소에 늘 염원해오던 신앙생활을 하기 위하여,
그의 나이 40세 때 발렌시아의 예수회에 평신도 조력자로서 받아 달라는 청원을 드렸다.
얼마간을 망설이던 수도회는 그를 받아들여, 마요르카의 몬떼시온 대학에 보냈다.
알퐁소는 마요르카 섬의 팔마라는 곳에 파견되어 그곳 수도원에서 40년간 문지기 수사로 지냈다
따라서 각양각색의 사람들이 로드리게스수사와 접하게 되자, 점차 그를 존경하게 되었으며,
그의 충고를 유익하게 받아들였다.

특히 학생으로 있던 베드로 클라베르는 자주 그와 이야기 하였다.
(이미 베드로 클라베르는 그만한 학식을 가지고 있었지만 바르셀로나에서 친하게 지냈던
평수사 성 알폰소 로드리게스로 부터 완덕에 대한 수덕 신학을 배웠다.
그가 흑인 노예에게 전교를 하게된 연유는 성스러운 친구의 덕택이 컸던 것이다.)
알퐁소 로드리게스는 신비에 관한 놀라운 감성을 지니고 있으며, 많은 사람의 존경을 받았다.
그는 장상의 요청에 따라 자신의 생각과 체험들을 글로 옮겼다.
제랄드 멘리 홉킨스의 시(1930년)속에는 성 알퐁소 로드리게스를 찬양하는 시가 있다.

그리고는 땅에 엎드려 입을 열었다.
"벌거벗고 세상에 태어난 몸 알몸으로 돌아 가리라.
야훼께서 주셨던 것, 야훼께서 도로 가져가시니 다만 야훼의 이름을 찬양할지라."
구약의 의인 욥은 삽시간에 전 재산을 잃었고 또한 하루 아침에 아들 7형제가 사망하는 등
뜻하지 않은 불행이 계속 닥쳐 왔을 때에도 하느님을 추호도 원망치 않고 오히려 이렇게 기도하곤 했다
"주님께서 주시고 주님께서 가져가시니 주님의 이름에 찬미가 있을 지이다!"
이 감탄할 표양을 본받아 얼마나 많은 성인들이 그 참혹한 불행의 구렁에서도 주님을 찬미했던가!
성 알퐁소 로드리게스도 그 좋은 예라 할 것이다.
그는 1531년 7월 25일, 스페인의 세고비아에서 태어났다.
부유한 상인을 아버지로 가진 그는 소년 시기를 보내고 이어 아버지의 재산을 상속받았고,
사랑하는 아내와의 사이에는 수명의 귀여운 자녀도 있어 오붓하고 단란한 생활을 계속 했는데,
이와 같이 사람들이 부러워하는 그들에게도 오래지 않아 하느님께서 안배하신 혹독한 시련의 손이 미쳤다.
우선 아내가 세상을 떠난 것으로 불운은 시작되고, 연달아 귀여운 자녀들이 죽어갔다.
사업도 할 때마다 번번이 실패로만 돌아가니, 실로 아득한 절망만이 그에게 남아 있었다.
이런 때일수록 악마는 사람을 유인하려 날뛰는 것이다.
그러나 그는 단호히 유혹을 물리치고 과감하게 다음과 같이 외치는 것이었다.
"주여! 당신은 나의 모든 것을 빼앗아 가시렵니까? 그러시다면 내 몸까지도 당신께 바치겠나이다."
이리하여 알퐁소는 즉시 발렌시아에 있는 예수회 수도원을 찾아가 원장을 만나 입회의 승낙을 받았다.
이미 나이 40이요, 라틴어에 소양도 없는 그는 사제는 바랄 수 없고, 평수사밖에 될 수가 없었다.
앞서 말한 바와 같이 그는 가혹한 시련 중 하느님께 대한 신앙과 겸손의 마음이 더욱 깊어졌으므로
원장의 그러한 결정에도 역시 아무 불만없이 감사하게 따랐다.
반년 후 알퐁소는 마로루카 섬의 팔마라는 곳에 파견되어 그곳 수도원에서 40년간 문지기 수사로 지냈다.
전에는 손꼽히는 큰 상인으로 뭇사람들의 선망을 샀던 그가
이제는 현관을 드나드는 사제와 일반 수사들 앞에서 무릎을 끓어 강복을 청하며,
방문객에게 몸을 굽혀 공소히 안내하며, 거지에게도 공손히 친절을 베풀며,
때로는 은혜를 망각하고 무례한 언사를 퍼붓는 자의 모욕에도 개의치 않고 공손한 마음에서 기쁘게 참고,
그 모욕을 그들의 회개를 위해 하느님께 기도와 희생으로 바쳤다.
실상 그런 태도는 각별한 인내심에서만이 가능한 것이었다.
어느덧 그의 성덕은 세상에 널리 떨치게 되었다.
즉 그를 접해 본 사람들은 웅변을 토하는 사제보다 오히려 그의 꾸밈없는 태도에서 깊은 감명을 받았던 것이다.
뿐만 아니라 그의 입에서 나오는 짤막한 말들은 놀라운 하느님의 예지가 빛난던 것이다.
그러므로 사람들은 앞을 다투어 그의 교훈을 청하고 기도를 간청했다.
그들 중에는 국가의 원수(元首)로부터 고관과, 거상이며,
심지어는 대주교, 주교같은 고위 성직자까지도 끼어 있었다.
특히 학생으로 있던 성 베드로 클라베르는 자주 그와 이야기했고 많은 충고를 받아들였다.
이리하여 팔마 수도원의 원장까지도, 신학의 소양은 없으나
성령의 비추임으로 탁월한 초자연적 지식을 간직한 알퐁소를 존경하며 열심히 권유해 책을 저술하라고 했다.
’수덕지남’과 그의 자서전은 그때 쓴 것이다.
이런 서적에서 그의 겸손된 마음속에 간직된 위대한 예지의 빛을 엿볼수 있을 것이다.
그 뒤 알퐁소는 백발노인이 되어 위장병을 얻었고 그 고통을 달갑게 참았으나,
마침내 1617년 10월 31일에 세상을 하직했다.

Profile
Third of eleven children in the family of the wealthy wool merchant Diego Rodriguez. Met Blessed Peter Faber when he was 10; the beati prepared the boy for his First Communion. Sent to study under the Jesuits at age 14, but his father died within a year, and Alonso returned home to learn and manage the business.
Married Mary Suarez at age 26. His business suffered, and two children died in infancy; one son survived. Widower in his early 30’s, and his mother died soon after. He sold the business, and moved in with his sisters; they helped raise his son, and taught Alonso prayerful meditation.
When his son died, he decided to follow his call to the religious life. He gave away what little he had left, and tried to join the Jesuits; he did not have the education they required, and was refused. Attended the College of Barcelona, but could not complete the work. Self-imposed austerities nearly destroyed his health; at age 60 he was ordered to begin sleeping in a bed instead of the chair, bench or ground he had previously used. However, at the recommendation of Jesuit Father Luis Santander, Alonso became a Jesuit lay-brother, admitted on 31 January 1571 at Valencia, Spain, and began to study alongside children.
Porter and doorkeeper at the Jesuit college of Montesion at Palma, Majorca for 46 years, a duty which involved delivering packages, seeing to the lodging of travellers, and dispensing alms to the poor. From this humble post he influenced many through the years. Obsessed with the spiritual, and given to extreme self-imposed austerities. He had a special devotion to Saint Ursula, and was so obedient to his superiors that when one told him to eat his plate, he tried to cut it with a knife and fork. Friend and room-mate of Saint Peter Claver; advised Peter to request missionary work in South America. Professed his final Jesuit vows at the age of 54.
Reputed to heal by fervent prayer. The night before his death was spent in a visionary ecstacy (see image). Some authors claim he wrote the "Little Office of the Immaculate Conception", but his part was to make more popular. Left behind a collection of manuscripts of journal entries, random thoughts, simple illustrations, and musings on things spiritual that are remarkable for their simplicity, sound and correct doctine, and spiritual understanding; they were published as "Spiritual Works of Blessed Alonso Rodriguez" in Barcelona in 1885.

(Alonso Rodriguez) (1532-1617) Confessor, born Segovia, Spain; died Majorca. After the death of his wife (Maria Suarez) and his three children, he was admitted into the Socicty of Jesus as a lay brother, 13 January 1571, either at Valencia or Gandia. At the end of six months he was sent to the college at Majorca where he remained as porter for 46 years. He exercised great influence on the members of the household and many others who came to him for advice and direction. He pointed out to Saint Peter Claver his future work as apostle of the Negroes in South America. In 1626 he was declared Venerable, and in 1633 was chosen by the Council General of Majorca as one of the special patrons of the city and island. His beatification was delayed until 1825, because of the expulsion of the Society from Spain in 1773. Canonized, 1887. Relics at Majorca. Feast, 30 October.

Studio nel Collegio dei Gesuiti, si sposo e, dopo essere rimasto vedovo, perse anche i figli. Accettato nel noviziato dei Gesuiti come fratello coadiutore, fu inviato nel Collegio di Monte Sion a Palma di Majorca, dove rimase come portinaio fino al termine della vita. Tale ufficio lo mise in contatto con la gente e gli offri l’opportunita di fare apostolato. Grazie ai numerosi carismi di cui Dio l’aveva dotato, Alfonso attiro intorno a se molti discepoli importanti tra i quali San Pietro Claver. Particolarmente devoto alla Vergine, egli e uno dei grandi mistici della Spagna e ci ha lasciato scritti sulla propria vita spirituale e scritti profondi ed ancora attuali di argomento ascetico.
Etimologia: Alfonso = valoroso e nobile, dal tedesco
" Dio - scriveva Alfonso Rodriguez - non ci ha chiamati alla vita religiosa e ritirata dal mondo affinche noi ci prendiamo cura delle cose che riguardano il corpo... Egli stesso, nostro Signore e nostro Dio, si prende cura dei nostro corpo, come & Ila nostra anima, e provvede a tutti i suoi bisogni per mezzo dei superiori ".
E ancora: ’" La strada che l’anima deve seguire per giungere alla santita, e quella di mortificarsi con l’aiuto della preghiera... 1 passi da fare sono gli atti interiori del cuore, con i quali ci si vince ".
Diceva anche: " Ah, Signore! Se lo sapessi, e se lo potessi fare, vi servirei come tutte le creature del cielo e della terra messe insieme ".
E: " La piu grande carita e obbedire a Dio ". Eppure non era ne un teologo ne un erudito, e neanche uno scrittore ascetico nel senso rigoroso del termine. Era semplicemente il frate portinaio nel convento dei Gesuiti a Palma di Maiorca, nelle Baleari.
Vero e che Alfonso Rodriguez; era giunto a quell’umile lavoro, che svolse fino alla morte, nel 1617, non perche sprovveduto o ignorante, ma per obbedienza e per spirito di mortificazione.
Aveva avuto, nel mondo, vita movimentata. Figlio di un mercante di Segovia era stato egli stesso mercante, dopo aver studiato sotto i primi Gesuiti. Sposato, padre di due figli, aveva perso la moglie, i bambini e tutti i beni, restando simile a un dolorante Giobbe cristiano. A trentacinque anni torno a scuola, e prosegui faticosamente gli studi interrotti in gioventu. Si presento, quasi vecchio, come novizio in un convento della Compagnia di Gesu. Venne accolto, ma volle restare fratello coadiutore, addetto al servizio materiale della comunita.
Fu e resto cosi portinaio nel convento dell’isola di Maiorca, che era come l’avamposto della riscossa cattolica proteso verso le terre dell’Islam e quelle, ancor piu lontane, del Nuovo Mondo.
Da Maiorca passavano i missionari diretti in America, e per tutti l’incontro con il Santo portinaio fu un’esperienza illuminante e a volte decisiva, come nel caso di San Pietro Claver, l’Apostolo degli schiavi, discepolo spirituale di Sant’Alfonso Rodriguez.
Proverbiale fu la sua obbedienza ai Superiori, al punto di non aprire la porta, un giorno, allo stesso Vicere, dato che il Rettore gli aveva prescritto di non aprire a nessuno prima di una certa ora. 0 al punto di tentare di fare a pezzi e inghiottire un piatto che gli era stato detto di mangiare intendendo, naturalmente, il contenuto!
La sua lezione fu soprattutto quella dell’esempio. Piu tardi, dopo la sua morte, furono raccolte le sue parole e i suoi detti, come quelli che abbiamo ascoltato e che ci tramandano la sua voce. Ma e una voce che, piu la si ascolta, piu lascia il rimpianto di non averla udita di persona, e soprattutto di non averla vista tradotta in vita.
