Nativia della Beata Vergine Maria

성모 마리아의 탄생을 기념하는 날로 동방교회에서 서방교회로 전해진 축일입니다.

5세기 말 부터 예루살렘에 있던 마리아 성당(오늘날 성 안나 성당) 축성일인 9월8일에 지켜졌습니다.

성모 탄신 축일에 관해서 성서에는 언급된 바가 없으나 가톨릭 신학과 교의에 중요한 자료가 되는

야고보의 원복음서를 비롯한 몇몇 외경에 전해집니다.

8세기에 동방 교회에서 크레타의 성 안드레아는 자신의 설교에 이 축일은 증언하였습니다.

로마에서는 교황 성 세르지오 1세가 언급한 바 있습니다.

젤라시오 전례서와 그레고리오 전례서에도 언급되어 있으며 이들 전례서를 통해 서부 유럽으로 전해졌습니다.

그러나 일반적으로 지켜진 것은 11세기 부터였습니다.

공식적인 교회 기록으로는 잘츠부르크 주교대의원회의 문헌에 이 축일이 오늘 날짜로 나온다.

(오늘의 말씀에서)

옛 전승에 따르면 복되신 동정 마리아의 부모는 요아킴과 안나이다.

야고보의 원 복음서와 다른 외경에 의하면,

요아킴은 나자렛에서 태어나 안나와 결혼하였으나 자식이 없었다.

한 때 그는 광야에서 40일간을 기도하며 자식을 기원했다.

그러던 어느날 안나가 아기를 낳으면 하느님께 봉헌하겠노라고 약속함으로써

천사로부터 아기를 낳는다는 전갈을 듣고 마리아를 낳았다고 한다.

이 마리아가 곧 예수의 모친이다.

요아킴은 후일 성전에서 예수를 증언한 뒤에 곧 바로 운명했다고 한다.

한편 또다른 전승에 의하면

안나는 나자렛 태생으로 유목민 아카르의 딸이다.

그녀는 20세 때에 요아킴과 결혼하여 40세에 마리아를 낳았다고 한다.

이분들에 대한 공경은

6세기경부터 동방교회에서 시작되어 서방교회로까지 확산된 것이다.

요아킴은 더 늦게부터 공경을 받았다.

두 사람의 성덕과 영웅적인 행위는 성서 속에서

마리아를 둘러싸고 있는 가정 분위기로 충분히 추정할 수 있다.

마리아의 어린시절에 관한 전설를 읽거나 성서에 나타나는상황으로 추측해볼 때

마리아가 여러 세대에 걸쳐 신심 깊은 생활을 해온 집안의 종교적인 전통에 심취해 있었음을 알 수 있다.

의사 결정에 대한 마리아의 결단력, 그녀의 끊임없는 기도 행위,

율법에 대한 모범, 위기의 순간에 드러나는 확고 부동함, 친척들에 대한 헌신,

이 모든 것들은 마리아의 가정이 과거의 가장 좋은 것들을 간직하면서도

다음 세대를 기꺼이 기다리는 화목하고 굳게 뭉쳐진 가정이라는 사실을 가르쳐 준다.

크레타의 성 안드레아 주교의 강론에서

옛 것은 사라지고 모든 것은 새롭게 되었도다.

"그리스도는 율법의 종결이십니다."

우리를 율법의 문자에서 끌어내시고 또 그 정신에로 이끄시기 때문입니다.

그리스도 안에 율법이 성취되었습니다.

입법자이신 그 분은 당신 손으로 만물을 만드시고 완성시키시고는

율법의 문자를 그 정신으로 변모시키시고 만물을 당신 안에 총화 하셨습니다.

그 분은 율법을 은총으로 살리시어 율법을 은총에 종속시키시고 은총을 율법과 조화시키셨습니다.

그러나 각각의 특성을 혼합시키지 않으시고 놀라운 방법으로 모든 것을 변모시키시어

힘겹고 노예 상태에 처해 있으며 억압받는 것을 모두 다 가볍게 해주고 또 자유를 누리게 하셨습니다.

이렇게 하여 우리는 이제 사도가 말하는 것처럼

"세상 것들의 노예가 되는 일이 없고" 율법의 문자에 더 이상 노예 상태로 매어 있지 않게 되었습니다.

이 신비의 계시, 이 신성의 비하,

그리고 하느님이 사람이 되심으로 말미암은 사람의 이 신격화

-이것이야말로 그리스도께서 우리에게 베푸신 은총의 절정입니다.

그런데 그렇게도 찬란하고 영광스러운 인간에 대한 하느님의 방문에는

우리가 구원의 위대한 선물을 받기 전 어떤 기쁨의 서곡이 있어야 했습니다.

오늘의 축일은 이것을 기념합니다.

이 서곡은 하느님의 모친의 탄생으로 시작되고, 신성과 인성이 결합될 때 종료됩니다.

그래서 한 동정녀가 태어나시어 젖을 먹고 자라나 영원의 임금님, 하느님의 모친이 되실 채비를 갖추십니다.

이날의 신비에서 우리는 이중의 이득을 얻습니다.

이날의 신비는 진리에로 우리를 이끌어 주고

또 율법의 문자에 매인 생활에서 자유의 생활에로 이끌어 내 줍니다.

그런데 어떻게 또 무엇 때문에 이렇게 됩니까?

확실히 어둠은 들어 오는 빛에 물러서고 은총은 문자 대신에 자유를 주기 때문입니다.

오늘의 축일은 신약과 구약 사이에 놓인 경계선입니다.

이 축일은 상징과 예표에 실재가 뒤따르고 옛 계약에 새 계약이 뒤따름을 보여줍니다.

그러므로 오늘 모든 피조물은 노래하고 춤추어 이날에 축제와 환희의 성격을 부여해야 합니다.

오늘 이날을 천상의 무리와 지상의 무리와 다 함께 경축하고

이 세상에 있는 것들과 세상위에 있는 것들이 하나가 되어 즐겨야 합니다.

오늘 만물의 창조주께서 새 성전을 건설하시어

창조주의 거룩한 거처로서 한 피조물의 태를 새로이 마련하시기 때문입니다.

하느님의 모친 성모님의 성탄을 장엄하게 거행하며,

수많은 국가와 도시의 주보일 뿐만 아니라

여러 교구와 학교의 주보이시며 연중 15회에 걸쳐서 성모님의 축일을 지낸다.

세상에는 여러 인사들의 탄신(誕辰) 축하가 있지만,

실지 예수의 어머니 성모 마리아의 탄생일 처럼 경사스런 날은 없을 것이다.

그녀는 천지의 모후시며, 구세주의 어머니이시며,

전인류 중 원죄에 물듦이 없이 탄생된 유일한 분이시며,

순교자의 모후라고 불릴만큼 고통을 겪으신 분이고,

아마 과거의 모든 명사(名士)를 전부 합한 것보다 더 많은 교회, 소성당, 조각, 회화 등을

갖고 계시는 분이실 것이다.

또 사람으로서 성모 마리아 만큼 그 이름이 불려지고

시(詩)에, 음악에, 설교(說敎)에서 찬미를 받는 분은 없을 것이다.

그녀는 예수의 어머니로서 구속 사업에 협력하셨다.

예수께서는 세상의 빛이요, 정의의 태양이시다.

태양은 서광에서 나오는 것이니, 성모는 곧 세상 구원의 서광이신 것이다.

우리는 이 거룩하신 동정녀의 탄생이 기원 전 몇 년 인가에 대해서는 확실히 모른다.

그녀의 탄생은 일체가 신기한 것이었다.

그녀의 부모는 요아킴과 안나로, 같이 연로할 때까지 자녀를 갖지 못했다.

그러나 그들은 자녀를 갖게 해 주시기를 끈기있게 하느님께 기도했다.

그 기도가 마침내 허락되어 옥과 같은 여자아이를 낳게 되었다. 이때의 그들의 기쁨은 말할 수가 없었다.

만약 그들이 마리아가 유례없는 깨끗한 영혼의 소유자요,

영원으로부터 구세주이 어머니로 지정된 것을 알았더라면

필경 친척들과 더불어 "어여쁜 마리아! 너는 원죄가 없도다" 하며 경탄했을 것이다.

그것은 어떻든 오래간만에 귀여운 딸을 얻은 요아킴과 안나는

너무 고마워 그녀를 하느님께 바침으로써 성정에서

하느님을 위한 여러 가지 사업에 이바지 하도록 했던 것이다.

그들은 모두 성 다윗의 가문이요 그만큼 신앙이 두터운 분이었다.

마리아가 일곱 살 때에, 부모가 맹세한 대로 그녀를 성전에 바쳤는데 노년에 이르러

겨우 얻은 자식이기도 하고 더구나 그녀는 보통아이와 달라 어딘가 신성하고

어딘가 엄숙한 점을 구비했다는 점에서 더욱 떠나 보내기 아까웠던 것이다.

그녀를 대하는 사람은 자연 사랑을 갖게 되었다.

하물며 그 양친에게 있어서랴! 그러나 양친은 그만한 인정쯤은 넉넉히

하느님께 바칠 수 있는 굳은 신앙을 가졌던 것이다.

마리아는 성전에서 무럭무럭 자라나 연령이 더해짐과 더불어 그 지혜도 증가해 갔다.

그리하여 후에 성 요셉의 배우자가 되고 구세주의 어머니가 되어 성자와 함께 고락을 같이 겪었다.

그는 아들 예수께서 십자가에 못 박혀 죽으심을 보았고 또 영광스럽게 부활하심도 보았다.

그 후 자기도 세상을 더나 그녀의 영혼 육신이 결합하여 같이 승천하는 특전을 받았다.

그는 지금 하늘의 모후, 은총의 분배자, 또 교회와 전 인류의 영적 어머니로서 모든 존경을 받고 계시다.

정말 그 양친이 이러한 따님이시라는 것을 반이라도 알았다면

그들은 얼마나 즐거워하며 얼마나 그 따님을 존경했으랴!

우리는 그 양친보다 더 많이 그녀의 모든 것을 알고 있다.

그러면 진심으로 기뻐하며 최대한의 축하를 올리자.

"성모 성탄을 기쁘게 경축하세.

 정의의 태양, 우리 하느님 그리스도께서 그 몸에서 태어나셨도다."

이는 오늘날 교회에서 바치는 기도문이다.

Questa celebrazione, che ricalca sul Cristo le prerogative della Madre, è stata introdotta dal papa Sergio I (sec VII) nel solco della tradizione orientale. La natività della Vergine è strettamente legata alla venuta del Messia, come promessa, preparazione e frutto della salvezza. Aurora che precede il sole di giustizia, Maria preannunzia a tutto il mondo la gioia del Salvatore. (Mess. Rom.)
 
La celebrazione odierna - leggiamo nel brano dei Discorsi di S. Andrea di Creta proclamato nell'odierno Ufficio delle Letture - onora la natività della Madre di Dio. Però il vero significato e il fine di questo evento è, l'incarnazione del Verbo. Infatti Maria nasce, viene allattata e cresciuta per essere la Madre del Re dei secoli, di Dio". E’ questo del resto il motivo per cui di Maria soltanto (oltre che di S. Giovanni Battista e naturalmente di Cristo) non si festeggia unicamente la " nascita al cielo ", come avviene per gli altri santi, ma anche la venuta in questo mondo. In realtà, il meraviglioso di questa nascita non è in ciò che narrano con dovizia di particolari e con ingenuità gli apocrifi, ma piuttosto nel significativo passo innanzi che Dio fa nell'attuazione del suo eterno disegno d'amore. Per questo la festa odierna è stata celebrata con lodi magnifiche da molti santi Padri, che hanno attinto alla loro conoscenza della Bibbia e alla loro sensibilità e ardore poetico. Leggiamo qualche espressione del secondo Sermone sulla Natività di Maria di S. Pier Damiani: “Dio onnipotente, prima che l'uomo cadesse, previde la sua caduta e decise, prima dei secoli, l'umana redenzione. Decise dunque di incarnarsi in Maria”.
"Oggi è il giorno in cui Dio comincia a mettere in pratica il suo piano eterno, poiché era necessario che si costruisse la casa, prima che il Re scendesse ad abitarla. Casa bella, poiché, se la Sapienza si costruì una casa con sette colonne lavorate, questo palazzo di Maria poggia sui sette doni dello Spirito Santo. Salomone celebrò in modo solennissimo l'inaugurazione di un tempio di pietra. Come celebreremo la nascita di Maria, tempio del Verbo incarnato? In quel giorno la gloria di Dio scese sul tempio di Gerusalemme sotto forma di nube, che lo oscurò. Il Signore che fa brillare il sole nei cieli, per la sua dimora tra noi ha scelto l'oscurità (1 Re 8,10-12), disse Salomone nella sua orazione a Dio. Questo nuovo tempio si vedrà riempito dallo stesso Dio, che viene per essere la luce delle genti.
"Alle tenebre del gentilesimo e alla mancanza di fede dei Giudei, rappresentate dal tempio di Salomone, succede il giorno luminoso nel tempio di Maria. E’ giusto, dunque, cantare questo giorno e Colei che nasce in esso. Ma come potremmo celebrarla degnamente? Possiamo narrare le gesta eroiche di un martire o le virtù di un santo, perché sono umane. Ma come potrà la parola mortale, passeggera e transitoria, esaltare Colei che diede alla luce la Parola che resta? Come dire che il Creatore nasce dalla creatura?".

Feast of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary
September 8

This feast is a commemoration of that happy and joyful day on whIch the ever-blessed vIrgin Mother of God first saw the light of day. The Church accordingly sings on this day,
"Thy nativity, virgin Mother of God, has brought joy to the whole world; for from thee has come forth the Sun of justice, Christ the Lord, Who putting away cursing bestowed blessing, and by overcoming death obtained for us life eternal."
In the Introit of the Mass the Church sings:
"Hail, holy parent, who as a happy mother brought forth the King Who rules heaven and earth from eternity to eternity. My heart hath uttered a good word; I speak my works to the King."
Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost. As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.

Prayer

Vouchsafe, O Lord, we beseech Thee, unto us Thy servants the gift of Thy heavenly grace, that, as in the childbirth of the Blessed Virgin our salvation began, so from the votive solemnity of her nativity we may obtain an increase of peace. Through Our Lord Jesus Christ, Amen.

The Lord possessed me in the beginning of His ways, before He made anything from the beginning. I was set up from eternity, and of old before the earth was made. For this reason Saint Bernard calls out to each one of us,
"Take not your eyes from the light of this star if you would not be overwhelmed by the waves; if the storms of temptation arise, if you are thrown upon the rocks of affliction, look to the star, invoke Mary. Are you confounded at the enormity of your sins, are you ashamed at the defilement of your conscience, are you terrified on account of the dreadful judgment, so that you begin to be overpowered by sadness, or even to sink into the abyss of despair, then turn your thoughts to Mary. In dangers, in distress, in doubt, call on Mary. She will not be far from your mouth, or your heart; and that you may obtain her intercession omit not to imitate her conduct. When you follow her, you will not go astray; when you invoke her, you will no longer be in doubt; when she supports yon, yon will not fall; when she leads you, you will surely come to eternal life, and will find by your own experience that she is justly called Maria - that is, Star of the Sea."
